Rockwell’s “Dugout” to be featured at Chalk the Walk

Norman Rockwell’s famous Saturday Evening Post cover “Dugout” will be the centerpiece of Mount Vernon’s Chalk the Walk festival this spring.

Norman Rockwell’s “Dugout” will be the centerpiece of the 2017 Chalk the Walk Festival in Mount Vernon, May 6 and 7.

A committee made up of staff and volunteers from the City of Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation, Mount Vernon Area Arts Council and the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG) chose the piece this week for the 12th annual Chalk the Walk festival, Iowa’s largest-ever Madonnari Festival. The two-day festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will feature the work of more than 300 artists utilizing a downtown city street as a canvas and more than a half-ton of chalk.

“We are thrilled to announce “Dugout” as our large community piece for 2017,” said Danielle Chargo, chair of the Chalk the Walk committee. “We have wanted to do a Norman Rockwell piece for several years, and the timing with last year’s historic Cubs World Series win seemed like the perfect opportunity. I can’t think of a better way to start out the summer of 2017! Please join us and help us create a 30’ by 50 chalk version of “Dugout.”

Artist, Volunteer and Food Vendor applications will be available in March.
