14th annual Lincoln Highway Arts Festival Sept. 14

The 2019 Lincoln Highway Arts Festival, set for September 14, is shaping up to be the largest and most diverse in its 14-year history. The event includes a Kite Jamboree and a record number of new artists.

“We’re really delighted with the number of artists coming to Mount Vernon for the first time,” said Steve Maravetz, president of the Mount Vernon Area Arts Council which presents the festival. “As of mid-August, we had 32 new artists who have applied. That’s a big number for us.”

In addition to the art, the festival will feature a Kite Jamboree from 10 am – 2 pm at the First Street Community Center. The arts council will give away a free kite to the first 100 kids. They can decorate the kites inside the FSCC and then fly them on the football field behind the building.

Another change for this year is a relocation of the event area. The festival is moving one block east and will encompass the First Street Community Center as well as the first block of First Street east of Highway 1.

“We decided to move it so we would be contiguous with the community center,” Maravetz said. “That’s where the kite jamboree will be. There will also be music, dance and demonstrations on the front lawn.”

This year’s festival will feature a very broad selection of art. “There will be everything from jewelry and sculpture to photographs and paintings, ceramics to fiber” Maravetz said. “The artists represent traditional and leading-edge styles and subjects. Something for everyone!”

The arts festival runs from 9 am to 4 pm but the fun won’t stop then. Several downtown merchants are joining the event by presenting demonstrations, art making, and music. A full schedule of events is posted at mvaac.org.
