This event will feature a lecture by Prof. Dr. Peter Fritzsche (University of Illinois) called “The Führer’s Democracy.”

Hitler? Democracy? Well, not exactly, but Nazism is fundamentally part of democratic politics; its violent political form is inconceivable without democratic ways of mobilization and democratic means of legitimacy. Obviously, fascism was not democratic in terms of content. Nonetheless, it was a people’s movement in which democratic methods and democratic appeals served undemocratic ends. Hitler lived in but also, in many ways, breathed democracy. His ideology in 1923, the raucous campaigning right before 1933, and the pure ethnic community the Nazis envisioned in power pose the question of how rooted in people’s rule were the foundations of fascism. National Socialism, fascism, populism–all are part of our modern heritage.

There will be a Q&A session following the lecture. We’ll also have a prize giveaway for attendees.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
