Historic Communities

Mount Vernon and Lisbon sit at the intersection of two historic highways, the Old Military Road and the great Lincoln Highway, the first cross-country motor route in the United States.

Located in Lisbon is the Lisbon History Center – a great place to research family history or learn about life in the early 20th Century.

Mount Vernon is the location of three nationally recognized historic districts including the entire campus of Cornell College, Ash Park residential neighborhood and the majority of Uptown retail district.

The Union Pacific Railroad is a key contributor to early success of the community and the college in terms of providing easy passenger access to the area. Both communities contributed to the Civil War efforts in terms or soldiers and a boulder from the Civil War Battlefield of Gettysburg resides in Lisbon cemetery.
