Master Gardener Talks

Four Master Gardeners will present on four consecutive Thursday evenings in Room 108 on Cole Library’s first floor.

March 7: Discover Butterflies – Devon Dietz
You will learn about the twenty most common butterflies in Iowa. The speaker will share wonderful photos of both caterpillars and adult butterflies. You will also gain knowledge on food sources for the caterpillar and the adult butterfly.

March 14: Starting Seeds and Transplants – Phil Pfister
Starting flowers and vegetables from seed is not only fun and satisfying, but it can also be a cost effective way of expanding your garden varieties. Phil Pfister will provide tips and techniques on seeding, transplanting, and setting plants out in the garden, and extending the growing season. This presentation concentrates mainly on vegetable production, but the techniques also apply to flowers.

March 21: Everything Whimsical – Lori Bailey
Let the fun begin! How about putting a little whimsy in your garden? Lori Bailey will share how to put your own personal style and artful fun into your garden. Learn how to accent your favorite plants with colorful, purposeful and whimsical garden art. It will turn your garden into a unique, one of a kind backyard retreat!

March 28: Gardening Folklore – Judy Stevens
Ancient civilizations to modern times have planted and propagated seeds and plants. With this life sustaining practice there were many superstitions and myths that were passed from generation to generation. This fun class will explore folklore and myths associated with gardening. These are non-Iowa State approved gardening methods.
