POWs in Iowa
Linda McCann will present a program on prisoner of war camps in Iowa. There were about 25,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners of war in Iowa from 1943 – 1946. There were two main camps for the POWS–Algona and Clarinda–and about seventeen branch camps. The branch camps did short-term work projects in their communities, which included Clinton, West Liberty, and Toledo. Linda was able to speak with people who worked with the POWs and got to know them. She shares their memories and stories in this program and in her book The Prisoners of War in Iowa.
An author of many books on Iowa history, including Lost Linn County and Lost Cedar County, Linda will bring copies of her books to sell.
This program is sponsored by the Lisbon Public Library and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 319-455-2800.
