Science Café: The Potential for Geologic Carbon Sequestration in Iowa
Eat. Drink. Talk Science! This science café discussion will focus on the topic “SIM-IA: Improving Rural Emergency Medical Care through Mobile Simulation.”
Ryan Clark, Professional Geologist, will lead this informal discussion.
Iowa leads the nation in biofuels production, an industry that is at the center of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) research in the U.S. Ethanol production emits nearly pure carbon dioxide (CO2) that can be captured and sequestered with little or no refinement. Thus far, carbon sequestration has not been done in Iowa, however there is evidence to suggest that there are geologic formations beneath Iowa that could be utilized for storage of CO2. This presentation will characterize the geology of Iowa, explain carbon storage, and investigate the geologic possibility of carbon storage in Iowa.
