Science Interest Group (SIG) Talk
The topic of this SIG Talk is diversity, presented by Marty Condon.
Nobody knows how many species exist on Earth today. Most discovered terrestrial species are tropical insects. Estimates suggest that only about 10% of those insect species have scientific names. Our work continues to reveal extraordinary and unexpected levels of tropical insect diversity. We find many more ecologically specialized species than anyone predicted. Why? We want to explain unexpected patterns of diversification (evolutionary processes) and patterns of coexistence (unexpected local ecological patterns of diversity).
This SIG will emphasize not only the diversity of insects, but also the diversity of people who contribute to our team effort to reveal the dimensions of biodiversity.
