Where Creativity Comes to Life: Artistic Experiences in Mount Vernon & Lisbon

In Mount Vernon and Lisbon, art is something you can observe AND experience for yourself! While there is truly art on every corner, what makes our communities special is the opportunity to step in, try something new, and create alongside others. Whether you’re picking up a paintbrush, threading a needle, or drafting your next short story, there is a class or creative gathering waiting for you. We are going to highlight a few of these artistic opportunities today!

Wren & Purl is both a book and a yarn store.  This cozy shop features a large crafting table designed for gathering and making together. They offer knitting and crochet classes, and every Friday from 4–6pm you can join Crafting Happy Hour. Bring whatever project you’re working on and enjoy creating in community. Learn more at wrenandpurl.com.

Abbe Creek Gallery is more than a gallery space. In addition to showcasing regional artists, they regularly host Saturday morning classes in topics such as photography, fused glass, and alcohol ink. It’s a chance to learn directly from experienced artists while trying a new medium. Details are available at abbecreekgallery.com.

For those interested in sewing, Blooming Acres Sewing Studio offers classes for both kids and adults. From beginner projects to skill-building workshops, there are opportunities for every age and experience level. Be sure to check their website for open sew hours and upcoming classes at bloomingacresmv.com.

In Lisbon, StART Creating operates as a creative consignment shop and community crafting space. Bring in unused craft supplies and discover materials for your next project. You can create independently, join others in the crafting space, or book classes and birthday parties. Visit their Facebook page for more information.

Writers will find inspiration at Lisbon Public Library, which hosts a free monthly Writer’s Workshop led by students from the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop. It’s an incredible opportunity to refine your craft and connect with fellow writers in an encouraging environment. Event details can be found at lisbon.lib.ia.us.

And mark your calendar: Chalk the Walk is back May 2–3 on Mount Vernon Main Street. Hundreds of artists transform sidewalks into vibrant works of art. You can even contribute to the community piece and become part of the experience yourself.
