The Cemetery Commission is hosting a Cemetery Walk on Sunday, September 20th starting at 2:00 pm in the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Iowa.

The Cemetery Commission is celebrating America 250 with historical portrayals of people who lived in Mount Vernon and are buried in the cemetery. The town’s history can be seen in the headstones of the interred.

Visitors on the Cemetery walk will be guided through the cemetery to meet actors who will reveal the stories behind the gravestones: first postmaster, educator, musician, athlete, firemen, Cornell alumni, and military veterans.

We honor the countless ancestors whose quiet lives and sacrifices made this nation and our town what it is. Their stories, etched in stone, remain an irreplaceable piece of our shared history.
