Show Your Local Love

We all know that volunteering makes our local community of Mount Vernon-Lisbon special! Without volunteers, a number of the annual events, fundraisers, and local projects wouldn’t happen.

Mount Vernon and Lisbon host many events in the last four months of the calendar year, which means there are ample opportunities to support local causes you believe in. Below are just a few wonderful volunteer opportunities, with more to come!

Farm 5k For a Cure at Bass Family Farms 9/20

Volunteer at a new timed 5K race at Bass Family Farms to fundraise for the American Cancer Society! All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Linn County, which funds cancer research grants in Iowa, free lodging near treatment centers, and patient support 24/7 at cancer.org and their hotline 1-800-227-2345.

Picnic Table Project with Friends of Palisades-Kepler State Park 9/27

Assist Ranger Luke with picnic table rehab, the sustainable way! Thanks to a private donor, Palisades-Kepler State Park has funds available to rebuild 16 picnic tables. Volunteers will start Phase 1 of this project by completing the following steps:

  • Cut and stack 80, 12′ boards
  • Dismantle four picnic tables and prep for new wood
  • Cut routed corners of 160 boards need all four corners

19th Annual Chili Cookoff presented by the CDG 11/1

It’s the 19th Annual Chili Cookoff on historic Main Street Mount Vernon on November 1st! Presented by the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group, the Chili Cookoff is a continued success thanks to our volunteer committee members and event volunteers.

Volunteers are supported by committee members throughout their shifts, and good times will be had! Check out the volunteer opportunities and grab a friend for a few hours of giving back.
